Kathleen Hume– Principal Architect

Kathleen Hume (née Houison) is a registered architect in WA and the Director of Hume Healthcare Architects Pty Ltd. She is a specialist healthcare design architect and planner with over 30 years of experience in the field. Kathleen has worked on a variety of public and private health care projects and followed projects through from needs assessment through all stages to commissioning.

Kathleen is acutely aware of the evidence of good design on patient well-being and recovery and keeps abreast of the latest trends. Her personable nature and competence have earned her the respect of clients and consultants alike.

Kathleen graduated in 1990 and started working for a boutique healthcare design practice (1990-1992). After completing her board exam in 1992, she joined a prominent South Africa-based healthcare design architectural practice– FGG Architects (1992-2003). Here she worked on many major healthcare projects in South Africa, such as the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital, an 860-bed tertiary hospital.

Kathleen was offered a partnership at FGG in 2002. A year later, with the logistical support and encouragement of her partner, she decided to start her own practice– Kathleen Houison Architect (2003-2008). She also started Health Facility Planning in partnership with a fellow consultant Renee du Toit, a registered nurse and IPC consultant. Together, they offered courses in healthcare design, accredited with CPD points and credits at university level (2004-2008).

In 2008, Kathleen and her family migrated to Perth, WA. In the same year, she joined the renowned Silver Thomas Hanley (STH) healthcare design practice in WA. This experience enabled her to become familiar with local healthcare practices and meet local consultants. As Project Architect in STH, Kathleen worked on a variety of healthcare projects.

In 2012, Kathleen went into private practice and was invited by the Department of Health, Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit (LARU) to join a panel of independent consultants who are responsible for reviewing licensing applications for various types of WA-based private healthcare projects, such as psychiatric hostels, nursing homes, and day hospitals (Class A, B and C). The said reviewing process covers the entire duration of a project that consists of the following stages in chronological order: Concept Design, Approval in Principal (AIP), Approval to Construct (ATC), and Approval to Occupy (ATO).

From 2012 to 2018, Kathleen continued with LARU consulting work and assisted her partner in healthcare design for Silver Chain and Ramsay Health.

In August 2018, she started her own dedicated healthcare design practice in August 2018, namely Hume Healthcare Architects Pty Ltd.
